As interest in SNNs and neuromorphic hardware grows, so does the need for a practical entry-level textbook. Everyone in the community has faced the question: “How do I learn about SNNs and neuromorphic systems? Where do I start?” Most literature focuses on either theoretical foundations or specialized research topics, and the material is scattered and disorganized. This leaves a gap for practitioners who want to learn, build, train, and deploy SNNs on neuromorphic hardware. This book fills that gap.

This book serves three purposes:

  1. It helps you get stuff to work. We gather the most important and useful practical insights. There’s more advanced material out there. Here we want you to hit the ground running.

  2. It is a collection of (citable) resources that serve as your gateway into advanced topics in neuroscience, electrical engineering, physics, computer science, and other SNN-related fields.

  3. It is community-driven and written by experts across specialized topics. We want it to be a living book that is developed openly, by the community and for the community. You can participate!

What makes this book different?

This book is for beginners interested in SNNs, for researchers exploring and advancing SNNs, and for engineers building and deploying neuromorphic systems. In other words, if you want to build SNNs, and not only read about them, then this book is for you.

The field of SNNs and Neuromorphic Computing is rapidly evolving, and this book provides you the foundation you need to contribute to the third generation of neural networks, i.e. SNNs, and build the next generation of AI systems. Welcome!
